The aim of the project is to study, primarily from documentary sources, the character and development of the eastern suburb of the city of London outside Aldgate up to c. 1670. The method is to reconstruct the history and topographical layout of the houses, gardens, and other properties in the area. This information is then used to examine the density and extent of settlement, the pattern of land use, the social and occupational structure, and the operation of the property market.

This report details the material covered and sampling strategy and provides a summary of findings.
