This article examines the commissioning and performance of John Masefield's play 'The Coming of Christ', first performed in Canterbury cathedral in 1928. It assesses the originality of such dramatic performances in English cathedrals; examines the opposition to the play, and; considers its place in the development of Bell's own thinking on the relation of the Church and the arts.
